RIGHT OF THE DAY: Protection From Voter Intimidation

YOUR RIGHT OF THE DAY: You have the right to protection against people who attempt to intimidate you in your efforts to vote or to register to vote. 1U.S. Code, Title 18, Section 245

Don’t like your member of Congress? Don’t complain, vote! (OK you can vote AND complain).

If you haven’t yet been bombarded by hundreds of campaign ads, you may not know that there is an election coming up. On November 4, you will have the opportunity to vote for the people you want to hold various elected positions within the federal and state government, and possibly local government, depending on where you live.

California voters will be voting on one federal position, member of the House of Representatives, and also on many state government positions, including governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and others. We will also be voting on a few propositions, which Law Soup will profile in depth for you soon. For now, check out the Secretary of State’s voter information guide here.Voter info guide

Before you do any of this, be sure you are registered to vote, which you can now do online! October 20 is the last day to register.

And if you find yourself being intimidated in any way related to voting, contact the U.S. Department of Justice.
